Mirador de Gérgal - Rural Living

Rural homes with a view in Gérgal, Almería

Search

Two village houses, fully renovated, under one of the clearest skies in Europe.

Gérgal sits at the foot of the Sierra de los Filabres, just off the A-92, half an hour from Almería and from the Tabernas desert. The village has what you need and little more: a bakery, a shop, a couple of places to eat and steep streets you can walk up in a morning. At the top is the castle, with the whole valley below it.

They are a few steps apart on Calle Pilanos, right in the village rather than on an estate on the outskirts. La Casilla sleeps three and La Casa de la Abuela sleeps five. Both are fully renovated, with a full kitchen, a fireplace, air conditioning and their own terrace looking over the valley.

What no other place has is the sky. The Calar Alto observatory, the largest in continental Europe, lies within the municipality of Gérgal itself. It isn't nearby: it's here. At night, with no streetlights around, you see the stars as in very few places on the continent.

All around, the sierra: walks up to the summit, the old Cañada Real drovers' road towards Aulago, the Las Menas mines and gravel tracks where you won't pass a single car all morning. And dogs are welcome in both houses, whatever their size.

The small house · sleeps three

La Casilla

The smaller of the two, for three people: one bedroom, a sofa bed in the living room and one bathroom. A full kitchen —hob, fridge, washing machine and whatever you need so you don't have to go out for dinner if you don't feel like it— and a fire going in winter.

The windows look out over the valley: from the living room you see the sierra and, at night, the whole sky. There is air conditioning and ceiling fans for the summer, which in Gérgal bites at midday and cools off as soon as the sun goes down.

It's a short walk from the castle, with uphill streets ahead and the sierra starting where the village ends. The place for two or three people who want to slow down for a few days without giving anything up.

A fireplace for winter, air conditioning for summer and living-room windows open to the valley.

The big house · sleeps five

La Casa de la Abuela

The big one, for five people. Renovated from top to bottom, keeping the exposed stone and the original walls wherever they were worth keeping. A large living room, a new kitchen and a patio with olive trees, which is where everyone ends up.

Plenty of room for a family or a group of friends: everyone has their own corner and you still all fit round the same table. The terrace looks over the valley, and it's the kind where dinner runs on without you noticing because nobody is in a hurry to go inside.

It's on the same street, Calle Pilanos, a few steps from La Casilla. If you're coming as two families or a big group, you can rent both at once and have the whole place to yourselves.

Eight guests if you rent both houses at once: they're a few steps apart, on the same street.

Pet friendly

Your dog is welcome in both houses

No size limit and no buts. Both houses have their own outdoor space where your dog can lie in the shade off the lead, and the village helps: quiet streets, little traffic and uphill walks that leave it content.

The sierra starts at the door. Dry riverbeds, dirt tracks and miles without meeting anyone, which is exactly what a dog that gets anxious around other dogs needs. In summer, do the long walks first thing or late in the afternoon: at midday the ground burns their paws.

It's 15 € per night and pet. Tell us when you book and we'll have everything ready for your dog too.
